Desperate Housewives

Desperate Housewives is a relatively new series. The fourth season is about to start in the United States. It´s about five women in their late thirties and early fourties who live in the same street, Wisteria Lane, and who have something in common: they lost a good friend, who committed suicide. In fact, all episodes are narrated by this dead character, Mary Alice. Gabrielle is an ex-model who married an apparently rich man who was later arrested for fraud in his business and whom she later divorced. Lynnette is a successful businesswoman who stopped working to take care of her kids but later switches roles with her husband Tom, who becomes a stay-home dad. Bree seems to be the perfect woman with the perfect life: a successful doctor as a husband, two nice teenage children and a beautiful house, which she takes care of meticulously; however, we later see that it´s all about appearances. Susan is a divorced mother who is looking for the love of her life; she´s probably the truest of the the five friends. Finally, Edie, who become friends with the other four only later, is a sexy, provocative woman in her fourties who will do anything to get a man. There´s a little bit of everything in Desperate Housewives – romance, drama, adventure and even horror.

In the last episode I watched, Gabrielle married the city mayor but got disappointed when she heard him telling his father that he had married her in order to obtain more votes from the Latin Americans. Her ex-husband, Carlos, found out that Edie, his girlfriend was lying to him when she said she was trying to have a baby with him. He saw her birth-control pills in her bag. During Gabrielle´s wedding reception, she found Carlos drinking and kissed him. Bree appeared after a long honeymoon in Europe and, to everyone´s surprise, she was pregnant. However, later, when she was already at home, she removed the fake belly she was wearing and called her daughter, Danielle, who is the one who is really pregnant, and told her to stay at the boarding school until the baby is due. Danielle said that she hated it there, but her mom didn´t care much. The end of the episode was dramatic: Edie hanged herself!

I like to watch Desperate Housewives because it´s a mixture of comedy and drama. I admit that sometimes it can get too violent and farfetched, but I have fun watching it anyway. In a way, I identify with the characters, who are around my age and have the same problems I do. TV series are more interesting to watch than soap operas because you can miss an episode and understand the following one easily, since each episode has a beginning, a middle, and an end.

Why are there more women who like this series than men?

I'm kidding, I've watched a few episodes and had a lot of fun!

Hi,

I thought that was a really clear summary of the show. NOW I know what's going on!! Unfortunately the third series has now finished here in New Zealand and we'll probably have to wait six months for the fourth one to arrive. I heard they made a Brazilian version of it (my wife is Brazilian and we hear all the really big news!). What's that like?

Hi, Isabela,

I don't really follow the episodes, but when I watch I have lots of fun, and you're right, we can identify ourselves and the people around us with the characters. Once, I was watching it and I realized that my husband was also watching it!

Now, I'm living in Key West, Florida, and I joke that my life is a mix of Desperate Housewives and Army Wives as I'm living on an American base (although my husband is a civilian) and not working! Funny to observe the couples around me!

What was the best episode in your opinion?

Eager to hear from you.

Hi Isabela,
isn't this series great? No wonder they are making a Brazilian version of it! I don't watch it every week, but I try to keep track of what's going on...
Hugs from Belo Horizonte!

I think the Brazilian version is going to be ridiculous because they're keeping the same plot, characters and settings, which doesn't really make sense; there are so many cultural differences!
Carla, I don't really have one favorite episode, but perhaps the best season was the first one. I can't wait for the new season to start here in Brazil. I guess it will only be in November.

In my opinion it is a good series, but nothing beats Sex and the City!
I just loved that show!

Dear Isabela,
I also like "Desperate Housewives" and watch it with my husband every Wednesday evening when it is on... We have the third season now running in Romania (I live in Sibiu, in the middle of the country), but I read about new episodes in the USA on the net, and I was glad to read about the one you spoke about. Lots of surprises for me! Gabriela having divorced Carlos, and the end with Edie hanging herself...
You have an interesting presentation here, congratulations!

I agree with you, Cristina. Even though I do love to watch DH, Sex and the City was better by far!

Hi,I love this series... in my country - Argentine - they did an Argentine version, but it didn´t have success.
I follow this series from the beginning and it´s very interesting and enterteining.
My favorite personage is susan because she is a very strong woman but that she looks for a love.
I think that more series would have to exist as this one. With mixture of comedy and drama.
goood luck =)

I have seen the serial “Desperate housewives”. Frankly speaking, I watched the first part of it, then I didn’t have enough time to continue watching it. But reading this commentary I understand I should watch it up to the end, as I’ve took an interest in it and I’d like to know about its main characters’ fortunes. The commentary is catching and I think that a lot of people will want to watch this serial. Now there is a Russian serial on our TV. It’s called “ТРИДЦАТИЛЕТНИЕ”. I think that both these serials are similar. Our Russian variant is about four women who are on friendly terms between each other and about their husbands. They are rich and firstly we can think that they don’t have any problems, but…
I like this serial and I’m eager to know what will be then.
